Graham Norton Backs Danielle Hope Vote
0In a press release about the future of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s reality casting shows such as Over The Rainbow, host Graham Norton also mentioned that he backed the public decision to vote Danielle Hope as winner.
Graham Norton has confirmed he would love to host another show searching for a new West End star.
The Irishman had lots of fun presenting Over The Rainbow, which saw Manchester teenager Danielle Hope crowned the new Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz.
But he admitted the shows are “really hard to tie up” as there are several necessary ingredients.
Speaking on the red carpet at the Bafta television awards, Graham said: “I’d love to [do another show]. I really enjoyed doing those shows. Those shows are really hard to put together because you need Andrew, you need a musical the public like, and you need a West End theatre. It’s really hard to tie it up.”
Last month, a report claimed that Lord Lloyd Webber was ready to quit the BBC after four shows in favour of a move to ITV.
Graham said that, were this to happen, he could not follow the musical theatre impresario because of his own contract with the Beeb.
Asked if it would be tough seeing someone else doing his job, he said: “Tough is a big word – it would be a bit weird but then I could watch the show and wouldn’t even have to go, so on another level, I’d get to enjoy them and my Saturday.”
The Bafta host also backed the public’s decision to vote Danielle Hope the winner of the latest contest, calling her “terrific”.

Danielle Hope’s Drama Teacher and other Supporters
3Danielle Hope’s Drama Teacher at Knutsford High School has been an enthusiastic supporter of Danielle’s talent not just during school hours in Greater Manchester over the past seven years, but also at the Over The Rainbow Studio on Saturdays. Helen Mayne travelled to London each Saturday to cheer on her student from the live studio audience. During filming for the BBC show Danielle publicly thanked Ms Mayne for supporting her dreams of becoming a performer.
Now the school has congratulated Danielle Hope in public:
Staff, governors and classmates have joined the chorus of congratulations for Cheshire East’s ‘Over the Rainbow’ winner Danielle Hope.
Millions tuned into the TV talent search on Saturday night to see the Knutsford High School student beat her two rivals to the coveted role of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.
The school community has supported Danielle every step of the way during her four-month journey – and perhaps no-one more so than drama teacher Helen Mayne.
Ms Mayne said
Everybody at Knutsford High School is incredibly proud of everything Danielle has achieved. To be the person considered by the public and Andrew Lloyd Webber to be the best out of 9,000 contenders for the lead in a West End production is a monumental feat. Having worked with Danielle since Year 7, I have never had any doubt that she had the necessary drive, talent and perseverance. Throughout her time with us she has proved herself to be the kind of performer who will give 100 percent every time she steps out on stage. It has been a rollercoaster four months but there was never any question that Danielle deserved to win. I am hugely excited for the show’s opening next year and will be in the audience to watch Danielle fulfil her dream.
Cheshire East Councillor George Walton, a Knutsford High School governor, said:
Danielle is a delightful ambassador for the school and a credit to the performing arts department, who do a wonderful job of nurturing the many talented students who pass through the school. Despite having rather a lot on her plate at the moment, Danielle remains committed to her studies and is returning to school in June to sit her theatre exams. We are all looking forward to seeing her again and passing on our best wishes. I will be following her career with interest – she is clearly destined for great things.
Councillor Hilda Gaddum, Cabinet member with responsibility for children and families, said:
On behalf of Cheshire East Council, I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to Danielle. She is an enormously talented young lady with a bright future ahead of her. It is extremely heartening to see that, despite having won the most coveted West End role of the moment, Danielle is returning to school to complete her exams. She clearly appreciates the importance of education and I applaud her for setting such a marvellous example to young people. I wish Danielle all the very best in her exams and her performing career.
Danielle on the Royal Variety Show
1Andrew Lloyd Webber announced that the winning Dorothy, in this case Danielle Hope, would be booked to perform at the Royal Variety Performance, 2010 in front of HRH the Queen which might become a sort of battle of the talent shows, since the winner of Britain’s got Talent also performs there, as part of the winning prize really, and maybe other similar shows like Strictly come dancing and the X Factor.

The Royal Variety Show normally takes place in December and is televised live on a Saturday night.
Introducing the acts in his own inimitable style will be this year’s host, award-winning comedian Michael McIntyre. Danielle Hope will join performers from the worlds of music, comedy and theatre to perform in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, at the iconic London Palladium for the 82nd annual Royal Variety Performance on 9th December 2010 – just as the Palladium itself celebrates a very special birthday, reaching its 100th anniversary on 26th December 2010.
Danielle joins a host of other performers including Take That, who will be performing on the show as a five-piece for the first time since 1994. Cheryl Cole will take to the stage with an exclusive performance of ‘The Flood’, taken from her second number one solo album, while urban trio N-Dubz will be rapping for the Royals, as they make their Variety Performance debut.
An all-star comedy line-up includes routines from Liverpool’s king of comedy John Bishop; Edinburgh Fringe Festival Best Newcomer, Sarah Millican; new funniest kid on the block, Jack Whitehall and everyone’s favourite East End geezer, Micky Flanagan.
Britain’s Got Talent winners Spellbound, double Gold medallists at this year’s Acrobatic Gymnastic Championships, will perform a spectacular brand new routine.
The people’s tenor Russell Watson will deliver a powerful performance of ‘Parla Piu Piano’, best known as the love theme from The Godfather, while the Chelsea Pensioners will give a heart warming rendition of ‘If You Were The Only Girl (In The World)’.
Other performers include Daniel Whiston, top-class ice-skater and two-time winner of Dancing On Ice, with his magical skating and flying routine.
The Royal Variety Performance is an annual charity event in aid of the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund. It will be shown on BBC1 in December. You can see Danielle Hope’s performance on the show in full on BBC1, Thursday 16th December from 8pm.
Here are the rehearsals:
Back to School for Danielle Hope
0Unlike Sophie Evans, who is considering whether to return to school or not, Danielle Hope is clear that she has exams to finish before even thinking about all the preparation that’s going to be needed for the role of Dorothy in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Wizard Of Oz at the London Palladium next year. In any case, rehearsals don’t even start until December.
Danielle is studying dance, theatre studies and musical theatre for her A-levels. But she had to quit the dance course after the heavy rehearsal schedule for the show meant she missed her final exam.
Videos of Danielle’s performances in Over The Rainbow were submitted as evidence of coursework to be graded by examiners at Knutsford High School which I think is brilliant! There’s even a ticker display on their website which says:
“All staff and students at Knutsford High School would like to congratulate Danielle Hope on winning BBC’s Over the Rainbow.”
Danielle said
I have my last theatre exam on the June 9 and I’m hoping to sit that. I’m going to have to cram the week before, read a couple of plays and write something, but the qualifications are important. I started them and I did really well, so it would be a shame to quit.
In the immediate aftermath of winning Over The Rainbow Danielle has been spotted on TV morning chat shows and the like, but all that might have to stop once she gets her head down to studying again.
It’s cute isn’t it? I mean Danielle could have just decided – that’s it, I’m a big star already, I shall immediately start living the lifestyle and milking it for all I can get before the publicity fades. But no, she’s just an ordinary girl with a great talent and a sensible head on her shoulders. There’ll be plenty of time for the West End lights next year when Danielle will be working flat out five days a week at the London Palladium.
Danielle Hope, Winner
0Danielle Hope was declared the winner of the Dorothy casting show, Over the Rainbow tonight.
After the announcement by Graham Norton, Danielle smiled and hugged fellow finalist Sophie Evans.
She genuinely laughed off Norton’s remark that she was now a West End star, but of course she is! Then Danielle thanked everyone involved, including the audience, backstage crew, judging panel and the other girls.
All I can say is thank you but it really does come from in here, It feels like not enough but I am just so grateful. We all are for this amazing opportunity.
Andrew Lloyd Webber said he was really pleased with the result chosen by the nation, which had never been wrong yet.
You’re the most fantastic, talented kid with a huge future ahead, Now the hard work starts but my goodness me, you can act from the soul and that is something that’s very special.
The show ended with Danielle’s rendition of Over the Rainbow, the hit song from the Wizard of Oz.
